From WWII in Canada to life on Maui

A childhood in Canada during World War II, raising a family in California, and finding paradise on Maui.

She grew up in wartime Canada. She became a pioneering surgical nurse. She raised a family in California. She found paradise in Maui. She lived a life filled with drama, adventure, and love, carried by her gratitude and her faith in God.

Carol Murdina Maud Bull (1932–2018) wrote about her extraordinary life in twelve essays and two interviews. Growing up during World War II, she watched the men of her family go to fight — one came home a hero, one came home shell-shocked, and one never came home at all. She went on to assist ground-breaking surgeons during the earliest days of heart transplant research, managed her husband's medical practice in San Francisco, survived an accidental shooting, and eventually found her greatest joy on the island of Maui.

A Hand on My Shoulder is a portrait of an entire century seen through one remarkable woman's eyes.
